Sierra Leone

For the past 4 weeks I have been in Sierra Leone, West Africa volunteering with Orphfund to build a high school for the orphans in a village called Kamakwie. The orphanage was built by Orphfund in 2008, so it was amazing to go back 3 years later and see how much good the orphanage has brought to the community and of course to the orphans themselves. There are around 50 children living there now, and all of them are lucky enough to receive an education. There are so many clever children among them, and it's just awesome to be able to help them reach their goals and achieve their best. Sierra Leone is no picnic. Having just emerged from a devastating and ongoing civil war a few years ago, the country is still getting back on its feet. It will be a long, long process, but I honestly can't believe how far they have already come. The spirit of the people is so high, and they are all so happy and grateful just to be at peace. Many of the rebels, who were only children when they were made to fight, have been rehabilitated and now live quiet lives back amongst the community they once set out to destroy...

Sierra Leone is a beautiful country, and they are slowly developing, but it will be a long time before they reach their full potential.
